Anonymous and GoDaddy. A Dangerous Precedent.

The world on the internetz is that it’s true…

Let’s say for the sake of argument that Anonymous really did attack GoDaddy.

Millions of GoDaddy sites have gone down, and perhaps lost millions or even billions in business, convenience, and credibility. Perhaps lives have been lost, or less bearable because of the attacks. And while GoDaddy is unreconstructed by Internet standards, supporting NASCAR, SOPA and many other crusty right wing causes, most of the people and business owners caught up in this little bit of late summer fun are completely innocent. They go with GoDaddy because it’s there, it’s famous, it’s a go-to, first to market type joint. They’re basically being blamed by Anonymous for not knowing any better.

That isn’t fair and it isn’t morally sound. Anonymous might think they have their hearts in the right place, but they also appear to have a serious God Complex. And what’s more they’re asking for a political hacking war. What would happen if “right-wing” hackers started taking down Planned Parenthood or the Social Security Website? At a certain point this kind of lawlessness can only harm their cause.

The truth is, for all Anonymous’ supposed embrace of free speech, it’s not exactly a great advertisement for your attitude towards free speech to be shutting down millions of channels of speech, information, data and commerce. Anonymous silences free speech, and they worst of all, they do it under the shroud of anonymity.

There’s no moral foundation for this kind of behaviour.

  1. Thank you for your comment. Point well taken, but the principle remains the same in my opinion. This person is going after GoDaddy in the name of a loose group or he wouldn't have identified himself as such.

  2. Yeah, but if you read closer it is not the Anonymous collective that is responsible for this attack. A single user is claiming responsibility.
